Deep Relaxation
editation is generally characterised by a feeling of deep
relaxation while at the same time remaining mentally alert.
The word meditation comes from the Latin meditari
which means to reflect upon. Setting aside a time
and a space to meditate allows you to go within, to distance
yourself from the distractions of the busy outer world.
As regular physical exercise tones and trains the body, so
meditating regularly tones and trains the mind. One of the
first things you notice when you start meditating is that
your mind chatters away about all kinds of trivial concerns.
The trick is not to dwell on these, but simply observe that
this is happening and gradually the mind will become still.
Eventually you will find that you can focus on one particular
subject and stay with it.
There are different kinds of meditation and the practice
is as old as man himself. If you seriously want to meditate,
there are several ways of going about it. You may choose to
seek out a teacher, or join a group of like-minded souls.
Or you may prefer to meditate on your own, perhaps with the
help of some of the books that have been written on the subject.
Whichever method you choose, the important thing is to meditate
in a way that feels right to you.
Meditation has many beneficial effects. Among these are a
feeling of serenity, of being at peace with yourself and the
world, while at the same time being able to function more
efficiently within it.
